Remember as a child climbing into trees, scrabbling from rough branch to branch and sitting with the wind whistling around your ears for hours as you build the imaginary castle around you? Here is the giant entry way with the boughs of the peppercorn leaning over you. Up by the huge branch fork is the living room, that nook beyond is the bedroom, and the round crinkled trunk below is the drawbridge. As adults we can relive those moments of pure freedom in some magical houses that tower above trees. A house like “Treetops” at Wye River on the Great Ocean Road.Having the good fortune to own “Treetops” we have fallen in love with many treehouses over the years. Australia - Fur ‘n Feathers Resort has accommodation in timber houses, located in a beautiful piece of original rainforest in Queensland only 90 minutes from Cairns. Africa - These are my absolute favourites and I have been lucky to stay in both the Tongabezi "Treehouse" and the "Birdhouse". Literally carved into the hillsides around living trees on the banks on the magnificent Zambezi river in Zambia, the “Treehouse” and the “Birdhouse” have beautiful furniture and local art made by local artisans. As you sit in a sunken bathroom open to the river you can watch elephants swim just below. Or watch the sun set over the river as you drink your champagne. India - Kerala Treehouses in an area known for its evergreen rain forest and coffee, tea, cardamom and pepper plantations.
